PRESENTING THE RED KENTSHIRE^®

The first F-2 Kentshire^® has been born and it's red, wow!!! It was born September in Black Diamond Washington at David and Amy Guy Kentshire^® farm. This has got to be a dream. We just never expected this. Both the sire and the dam are black and black being dominant we expected the progeny to be black. The sire is a F-1D Kentshire^® named Montana(Dexter sire/ Hereford dam). The dam is a F1-H Kentshire^® named Michelle (Hereford sire/Dexter dam). Both parents are therefore half Dexter and half Hereford out of selected bulls from each breed. The red must be a recessive gene. When you breed recessive to recessive you usually get the recessive trait. We couldn't be happier and David and Amy are ecstatic. The progeny is a lovely little heifer calf with great conformation and markings. Her name is "Montana's Princess Ruby". This completes the two breed triple cross in the Kentshire^® breed.

Does this mean that all the F-2 Kentshires^® will be red? My friends in the world of genetics tell me it's possible but probably a 50/50 chance. If we get black F-2's that will be fine but it is sure great to have this first beautiful red heifer. Now, the next step will be to get a red F-2 bull to start the herd of red Kentshires^®. Not only a completely new breed of miniature cattle but a new color for the breed.

Mini Dexter breeders have for years been trying to develop the Red Dexter. Dexter breeders haven't had much luck with the endeavor. Well here's the next best thing or maybe it's the better thing. The two breed triple cross Red Kentshire^® can give you maximum heterosis (hybrid vigor) and the Hereford red color together with the great milking ability of the Dexter. How about that!!!

Just so you know, we currently have three F-1H Kentshires^® for sale; two heifers and one bull. Next year, 2000, we will have around twenty one Kentshires^® for sale; nine F1-D's and twelve F1-H's all out of the two foundation bulls. This will give us a total Kentshire^® population of forty-three registered animals. A great start for this new breed.
